Since the age of 12 Kim Grunden has been dealing with chronic back pain. It was simply a part of life that she had learned to deal with. After the birth of her daughter it wasn’t something she could deal with anymore. The combination of sitting on the floor, bending over and lifting a young child made the pain unbearable. Trips to the chiropractor and physical therapy provided little or no relief and over a two year period the pain had traveled from her back into her legs and made any amount of physical activity difficult.
Through a series of x-rays and MRIs eventually it was determined that Kim had spondylolisthesis, a condition in which a vertebra in the spine slips out of proper position and onto the bone below it. At this time Kim’s Chiropractor referred her to Dr. Kager at Lancaster NeuroScience & Spine Associates.
After discussing the treatment options, most of which had been tried previously with little success, the decision for surgery was made. Soon after, Kim underwent a lumbar fusion of her L-4/L-5 under the care of Dr. Kager. Just two days post-op Kim was sent home with a back brace and a recovery plan. Three months post-op Kim’s check-up with Dr. Kager revealed that her spine was perfectly aligned and the back brace and pain medication were no longer needed.
Kim feels like she is a new person. She can now play with her kids and enjoy the simple things in life pain free, something that she hasn’t been able to do for 20 years! Kim describes her life changing experience:
After 20 years of everyday back pain I am completely pain free! It is still shocking to me. The back pain had become normal to me. I had to learn how to function despite it. I feel so spoiled to be living pain free! The treatment by LNSA was excellent. I could not be more pleased with the results!
